Who We Are

Teachers Cricket Club, formed in 1964 by John Hall and other members of the Teachers Football Club, commenced playing in the A Reserve section of WASTCA in the1964 – 65 season.   The team for the Club’s first game on October 17 1964 against Nedlands was John Hall (c), Mike Tognolini, Len Volich, Kevin Casey, Paul Brinklow, John Feely, Jim Exley, Noel Purvis, Fred Matthews, Stuart Oates and Jack Ransom.

Other players from the first few years of the club included Rod Rate, Kelvin Sinclair, Alan Kennedy, Roy Criddle, Ian Jennings, David Seal, Gus and Frank Schwarzbach, John Guidera, Ric Evans, Kerry Darragh, Bill Cowin, John Gallagher, Tony Byrne, Don Lee, Rob Thompson and John McDonald.  The majority of players in these years were teachers and the club received good support from the Teacher’s Union and the various schools which provided training and playing facilities.

The Club was promoted to A Grade and formed a second team for the 1965 – 66 season.  The third team was added in 1970 – 71, a fourth in 1989 – 90 and a fifth in 1991 – 92.  From 1986 – 87 to 1994 – 95 the Club also entered a team in the Metropolitan Veterans Cricket Association.

From the 1988 – 89 season the WASTCA teams have played under the name of Shenton Park.  The change was made to reflect the changing nature of the membership and to give a district identity, essential if the Club was to receive local government assistance in finding a home base.

Before the Club gained the current facilities at Rosalie Park, training was held at Kensington Primary School (1964 – 69), Kent Street High School (1969 – 72) and Perth Modern School (1972 – 93).  Early “home”matches were played at various grounds provided by the then Association, e.g. the Perth Esplanade, Wellington Square and Raphael Park.

Since then the Club has used:

Kent St (1970 – 87), Scarborough SHS (1970 – 75), Perth Modern School (1970 – 1998), Hollywood SHS (1987 – 94), Rosalie Park (since 1989), Warwick SHS (1991 – 92), Churchlands (1996 – 2000) and McGillivray Oval (since 2000) as home grounds.

At one stage in the 1970’s the Club had three turf wickets: Kent Street, Scarborough and Perth Modern School.  However, the increasing cost of maintenance and the reduction of gardening staff at the schools led to the Perth Modern School wicket being replaced by an artificial surface and the other two not being maintained.

The Club were without clubrooms for most of its existence.  After training and games, players gathered firstly at the Hurlingham Hotel, then the George Hotel in West Perth (since demolished) and the Victoria Hotel in Subiaco before beginning a long association with the Subiaco Bowling Club (1980 – 89).  When the bowling club closed, the Shenton Park Hotel then the old rooms at Rosalie Park (1990 – 93) were used while negotiations proceeded to establish our current club rooms.  Our success in helping create the excellent facilities enjoyed at Rosalie since 1993 through our membership of the Rosalie Sporting Association is largely due to the work of Kevin Bowman, the Club’s President at the time.

The Club’s most successful season to date was 1996 – 97 when the first and fourth teams won premierships.  The third team appeared in semi – finals and three players won individual association awards.

The Club has fielded teams in each of the association’s grades.
